This course is designed to acquaint students with a variety of approaches to the past used by historians writing in the twentieth century. The books we read have all made significant contributions to their respective sub-fields and have been selected to give as wide a coverage in both field and methodology as possible in one semester's worth of reading

Anne McCants is a Margaret MacVicar Faculty Fellow and Professor of History at MIT with research
and teaching interests in the economic and social history of the Middle Ages and Early Modern Europe,
As well as in the application of social science research methods across the disciplines.
Anne’s research projects span multiple centuries of European economic development but
all grounded in a common concern to better understand the standard of living in the past and those features of the economy that contribute to social welfare.
